Interview - Improving nanospray LC-MS workflow reliability

This is a short interview with Dr Gagan Jhingan, Managing Director at VProteomics, an organization providing mass spectrometry-based discovery and targeted proteomics services to research groups across India. Drawing on his experience in LC-MS workflows, Dr Jhingan discusses common challenges associated with nanospray analysis, including spray instability, emitter blockages and downtime, and shares how Trajan CB Emitters have helped improve reproducibility and laboratory efficiency.

1. Before switching to Trajan CB Emitters, what challenges did you experience with other emitters?

A good qualitative and quantitative proteome analysis requires stable nanospray during the course of a sample run. Despite peptide sample clean-up processes, certain sample matrices tend to interfere with emitter spray and, in extreme situations, cause blockages. These technical issues result in significant downtime and delays in project deliverables. 

2. How has the Trajan CB Emitter performed over time?

We have performed hundreds of runs using Trajan emitters and the spray quality is very robust.

3. How do Trajan CB Emitters compare with other types you’ve used?

So far, the Trajan emitter is providing the best spray stability on our MS setup. We are using 3000 volts.

4. How do Trajan CB Emitters help you achieve your overall goals?

Improvement of nanospray quality provides us more reproducible data for our QC and research samples saving us time and better management of lab resources.

5. Would you recommend these emitters to peers in your field? If so, what would you tell them?

Trajan emitters provide very robust and reproducible nanospray and are great if you have large cohort samples, which need to be monitored for multiple days without interruptions.
